LINER ASHORE

Mishap Off Coast Of North

Australia

SYDNEY, January 16.

The Burns, Philp liner Merkur went ashore off the Northern Territory coast today, when bound from Darwin to southern ports. The vessel is carrying a big cargo and has a fairly heavy passenger list.

The company's freighter Tulagi is standing by and will attempt to tow the Merkur off the reef.

All of the 70 passengers and 120 members of the crew are safe, but the liner is firmly wedged in the coral about a quarter of a mile off shore.
