SOVIET ACTION

Cynical Contradiction

LABOUR LEADER’S VIEW

(British Official Wireless.)

(Received 11.30 p.m. January 14.) LONDON, January 13.

The leader of the Labour Party, Mr. Attlee, in a speech today said that Nazism had no gospel except the worship of force, which exalted brutality, cruelty and intolerance, corrupted and enslaved many of the German people, and sought to bring others into the same position.

Speaking of Russian Communism. Mr. Attlee said it was superior to Nazism because it was inspired with the ideal of freedom for the workers, but the methods of repression, brutality and dictatorship were only too like Nazism.

He said that Soviet action in Finland was a cynical contradiction of all that Communists bad professed during the past few years. “It is clear that the Fascist, party in this country and tlie Communist party are mere appendages to .foreign . dictators. Communists have no right to the name of Socialists or Communists. They are Stalinites. Whatever Stalin says is right for them. If anyone suggested an alliance between Hitler and Stalin six months ago, they would have howled with rage,” said Mr. Attlee. Speaking of Labour’s peace aims, Mr. Attlee said, “We seek a Britain built on the principle of the right of every individual citizen,to the fullest life that the country can give and a new world where every nation and race will be able to make a contribution to tlie common good.” He hoped the German people would have thrown off the yoke of Hitlerism before the war proceeded to extremities and that the people of Soviet Russia would be true to Socialist principles and, withdrawing from aggression, would stand with the democracies against the common enemy—Hitlerism. Mr. Attlee in concluding said that only by the application of Socialist principles could Britain be brought through the present crisis and deal with the problems peace would bring.
