SHELL INVENTION IN U.S.A.

To Replace Balloon Barrage (Received January 14, 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, January 13. Military experts reveal the development of a three-inch anti-aircraft shell which instead of exploding and scattering shrapnel at a normal maximum altitude of live to six miles, releases a parachute trailing hundreds of feet of steel tape designed to enmesh propellers. It is believed that a rapid lire barrage would make a network through which it would be impossible for planes to pass. The shells have an effective range of 25,000 feet, which would wreck the accuracy of bombers. It is predicted that this will outmode balloon barrages. It is understood that the invention has been sold to France for use when the anticipated large-scale raids start on Britain and on the Western Front.
