FISH BY AUCTION

Abolition Of Market

ACTION IN DUNEDIN

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

DUNEDIN, January 13.

In spite of representations from many quarters it has been decided to abolish the open market in Dunedin for the sale of fish. This information is contained in a letter from Mr. E. Sheed, representing the Fish; Advisory Committee. It is difficult to forecast the results of the step, but the general opinion of those interested is that prices to the public will advance while fish generally will be in shorter supply. The new method of marketing will come into operation on February 1. The greatest effect it will have will be to make all fish pass through the hands of one or two wholesalers, making it comparatively easy for the Government to keep a cheek and control business. Fishermen’s Views. However the retailer may view the abolition of the fish auction market iti Dunedin the Port Chalmers fishermen are definitely in arms against the decision. They claim that tins action has been taken only here and that the Christchurch auction will carry on. They are also unanimous in the belief that local action was taken because of the Port Chalmers men’s refusal to amalgamate with the Seamen’s Union.

“We understand,” said one, “that an import licence covering the supply of all fishing gear was granted Io the Seamen’s Union, yet our licence was cut down to one-sixth of our requirements. Wliy should a trading licence be granted to an industrial union which has never before been under the necessity of trading in these supplies?” The president of the Fishermen’s Association claimed that following this decision by the Advisory Committee cm which the fishermen are not represented, the local market would be bare for five months of the year and fishermen would lie on relief. A general meeting of all fishermen is called for Monday night.
