DOMINION BOWLS
Eight Left In Pairs Championship WIND AFFECTS GAMES Section Play In Fours Today Play in the pairs championship at the Dominion bowling tournament was continued in Wellington yesterday and the Held of 07 which commenced in the post-section series was narrowed down to eight. The finalists are Bremner (West End, Auckland) ; 11. Dickson (Thorndou) J. B. Ixiwric (Island Bav), C. Spearman (Sydenham). R. A. Barusdale (Christchurch), I’. McWhannell (Hataitai), A. C. Cullen (Thorndou) and I. B. Heid (Lyall Bay). They will play off in the order mentioned as players become available following the fours championship. Wellingtonclubs, already holders of lire pairs championships, qualified for the concluding rounds with live representative pairs, two coming from the Thorndou club which scored its only victory in 1916. The conditions for play were decidedly trying, a strong and gusty northerly wind upsetting calculations throughout the day. Father and Son. Some sterling bowls were played in a nasty cross-wind at Hataitai, wbeie the father and son combination, A. and 11. Dickson, Thorndou, qualified as green finalists. Their toughest game in the series took place in the morning against 'the promising Frankton Junction pair, E. L. Whineray’ and WIt. Hawkins. Hawkins forged to the front at. the sixteenth and was two up on the board and had two on the head at the 20tb, when 11. Dickson killed the end with a beautiful drive. A. Dickson drew the shot on the succeeding two heads to make the scores level and again put in two on the 22nd to win the game two up. H. Dickson, who is skip to his father, is one of the youngest bowlers participating in the tournament and his later success when the pair beat Haworth, holder of two Dominion rinks and a pairs championship, was applauded by an interested gallery. Haworth too, provided thrills at Hataitai. In his morning game with Colebrook (Ponsonby) he was one down on the final head with the scores level, but drew the shot with, his last bowl to reverse Die position. Keen iffterest was taken iu finding the Wellington green finalists, and a fair assemblage followed the semifinals ami final in the afternoon. _ In the first semifinal. W. Bremner and L. Donaldson (West End, Auckland) proved too consistent for A. IL Benefield and J. Wight (St. Johns, Wanganui). Both the West End men | picked up the strength of the green carlv. an'd forged steadily ahead. They were lending by 13 to-1 on the eleventh head, but the St. John’s pair came on to their game, and scored three on the twelfth bead and two on the next, reducing the leeway to 9-13. Bremner mid Donaldson produced sound bowls to race away again, and were leading by 20 to 13 on the eighteenth head. Maintaining their steadiness the West End pair ran out winners by 22 to 15. The other semifinal saw an exciting tussle between F. Livingstone and W. Whittaker (Onehunga) and S. Hawken and G. Teaman (Hamilton), which was not decided till the twenty-second head had 'been played, when the Onehunga pair won an uphill victory by 20 to 19. The Hamilton pair were 4 to nil on the third head, but the Onehunga pair scored 4 on the fourth to even the scores. An exciting contest ensued. They were 13 all on the fourteenth head, and 19 all on the twenty-first. Whittaker, who ha'd been leading well, drew one on to the kitty on the twentyfirst head, and this gave Livingstone and Whittaker a harcUfought win by a point. Bremner Shows Brilliance. The final between Livingstone and Whittaker and Bremner and Donaldson was regarded as one of the most important matches of the tournament, and the play was closely followed. Bremner and Donaldson maintained their steadiness, and led by 16 to 4 on the seventh head. On the eighth the Onehunga pair were lying two, when Bremner, with it brilliant drive, cut out bis opponents’ two bowls, and scored four on the head 1 ? giving bis side a lead of 16 to 4. The leads were playing well, and Bremner was drawing with deadly accuracy,' but Livingstone was not at bis best, bumping too many of his deliveries. On Ibe sixteenth bead, Bremner again cut out two bowls, and scored three for his side. On the seventeenth head, Whittaker brilliantly drew bis three bowls on to the jack. but. Bremner spoilt a pretty picture by burning the head with his first bowl. They went on to the twentieth head, on which Livingstone and Whittaker scored three, but as the West End pair were then leading by 26 to 19 they called it a day.
