Visitors For Bowls Tourney Entertained
The social highlight of the New Zealand Bowling Association’s annual tournament which opened this week, was a dance and concert in the Wellington Town Hall. More than 900 bowlers, their wives, and friends attended, and the gathering will long be remembered as one of the happiest of the tournament. The dance was preceded toy an excellent concert '■arranged by Mr. H. F. Wood, and the artists were Mr. Ruth Sell, Mr. W. McKeon, Mrs. Wilfred Andrews, Mr. Wood, Mr. W. Arcus, and Mr. T. Hill. Mr. Reginald Maddams was .at the piano. The president of the New Zealand Bowling Association, Mr. M. J. Casey, gave a hearty welcome to the players, their wives, and the guests. Mr. Casey, with, his council executive, consisting of Mr. J. Kershaw, Mr. W. Gilbert, and Mr. S. M. Stone, was responsible for the arrangements, with the valuable assistance of the ladies’ committee, comprising Mrs. M. J. Casey (convener), Miss Casey, Miss M. Casey, Mrs. W. Gilbert, Mrs. B. A. Guise, Mrs. C. Harvey, Mrs. 8. Ingram, Miss Ingram, Mrs. J. Kershaw, Mrs. AV. E. Hay-McKenzie, Mrs. J. Norrie, Mrs. J. H. O’Donnell, Miss Spencer, Mrs. A. F. Spiller, Mrs. S. M. Stone, Miss Stone. After the concert, the floor was cleared for dancing to orchestral music, and the rest of the evening passed swiftly away in an atmosphere of great conviviality. Supper was served in the Concert Chamber, and was also a great success. Members of the executive and councillors, who were present with their wives, included the president and Mrs. Casey, Mr. L. B. Evans, vice-president, and Mrs. Evans, Mr. and Mrs. J. Kershaw, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Truscott, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Whitten, Mr. S Lewis, Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Petty, Mr. and Mrs. W. Gilbert, Mr. and Miss Stone, Mr. H. Mayo, Mr. and Mrs. S. C. K. Smith, Mr. D. H. Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Manning, Mr. W. Effort!, Mr. H. B. Oakey, Mr. B. A. Guise, Mr. W. E. Hornig, Mr. and Mrs. S. Ingram, Mr. T. Lock, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Hay-MacKenzie, Mr. and Mrs. J. Norrie, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. O’Donnell, Mr. J. J. Roberts, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Spiller. The bowlers and their wives came from all over New Zealand; Mr. S. Morris came from Cooma, New South Wales, and Mr. C. C. Clark from Suva. A round of social events in connexion with the tournament has included a morning tea at Kirkcaldie and Stains on Wednesday, and today a tour of the bays will take place.
