DETECTIVE SHOT
I.R.A. Member Blamed
(Received January 4, 11.15 p.m.) LONDON, January 3. /Three patrolling detectives challenged two men whom they knew to be members of the I.R.A. One of the men immediately fired, hitting Detective Officer Roche near the heart. His colleagues were about to draw their revolvers when a crowd rushed to their assistance. Both men were detained. A later message states that Detective Roche died at 2.30 p.m. The shooting occurred In Patrick Street. Cork’s principal thoroughfare.
