BOOK IMPORTS
Proposed Restrictions
CRITICISM BY P.E.N. The New Zealand centre of the P.E.N., a world-wide organization of writers, recently called a special meeting to discuss the Government’s proposed restrictions on the importation of printed matter. It was apparent that New Zealand writers felt that this restraint on intellectual freedom was not in the best interests of the community. A resolution to this effect was adopted unanimously, and it was decided to send copies to rhe Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, and the Minister of Customs, Air. Nash. The text of the resolution is:—
"That tire P.E.N. (New Zealand Centre) regards with uneasiness the severe restrictions which are considered by the Government to be necessary. on the importation of books into New Zealand. Realizing the difficulties of the Government, and believing that it shares our conviction that, any measures which might tend to act as a restraint on intellectual freedom are to lie deplored, the P.E.N. trusts that the restrictions will not be applied to the bettor class of cultural literature. scientific and educational books, mill that, the Government will take the first opportunity of relaxing them altogether.”
