(Received January 4. 12.30 a.in. I MELBOURNE, January 3. Tiie hottest day of summer was experienced today when the city temperature reached 106 degrees. After a comparatively cool night, a hot north wind arose early in the morning. By 9 a.m. the temperature was 90 degrees. • High temperatures prevailed all over Victoria. By 6 p.m. a cool change occurred, the temperature dropping about 20 degrees. More hot weather is forecast. Serious grass tires are expected later it the exceptionally hot conditions continue. The heat: today buckled several chains of the .Mornington railway line so seriously that a special race train was held up. Passengers had to continue the journey by car. Yesterday, when the temperature was only 101.1 'degrees. Melbourne used 145.612,000 gallons of water.
