COUNTIES' ASSOCIATION CHRISTMAS PARTY

A successful Christmas party was recently held by the’ Birmingham anti Alldland Counties’ Association in AVellington. Gay decorations and amusing caps for everyone lent colour and animation to the scene. The carol “Silent Night” opened the party, and tlie company joined heartily in the singing of other carols and favourite songs.

Games in charge of Air. and Airs. Cooke and Air. and Mrs. Rowe caused great amusement, prizes being won by Miss Bibby and Alessrs. Parsons and Smith. A special competition for the president's prize was won by Airs. Heele.

There was a full representation of kindred societies in AVellington, including the AVelsh Society. Air. F. H. Whittaker, president, in welcoming the Visitors, spoke of the cordial relations existing between the various societies. Mr. Karl Atkinson spoke on behalf of the kindred societies, mentioning specially the loyal co-operation in making the centennial year celebration of Sc. George’s Day an outstanding success. A new member, Air. AV. Peach, also expressed appreciation of the kindly welcome always received at the association gatherings. One of the highlights of the evening was an account given by Captain Tether of some experiences at sea. His amusing stories kept the company in good humour.

Suitable songs were sung by Airs. Wedekind, and Air. Arthur AA r eller. Aliss Ethel Bartley was the accompanist for the evening. Mr. AV. R. Cooke was an eflicient AI.C. for the evening, and supper was arranged by Mesdnmes Levin, Phipps, and Topp. The special Christmas cake was ceremoniously cut by Airs. Tullet, of the Kentish Assbciation. AVoinen in Japan.

In Japan, Airs. Inouye has been appointed a member of tlie Council for Immigration into Alanchukuo, and also of the National Council for Health Control. Another woman, Aliss Hatta, is the only woman member of the Cabinet Information Bureau.

Because of labour shortage, Japanese women are being permitted to work in underground mines again.
