ECONOMY URGED

Appeals To Conserve t Petrol Supplies An appeal for economy in the use of petrol in the motor transport industry is made in a statement issued yesterday by Messrs. W. Hayward, chairman of the New Zealand Passenger Services’ Federation, V. J. Leek, president of the New Zealand Taxi Proprietors’ Federation, and A. Shorter, chairman of the New Zealand Rental Car Proprietors’ Association. A similar appeal was made on Thursday by Messrs. J. H. Kirkwood, president of the New Zealand Carriers’ Federation, and J. B. Cullen, president of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance. • Appeal to Industry’. In a statement to the Press, Mr. W. W. Mulholland, Dominion president of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, said the reasons (which arose out of war conditions) that made it necessary to take steps to conserve supplies of petrol and to economize in the use of it had been communicated to him confidentially. From this knowledge which he had of the position he could endorse the appeal now being made to practise strict economy in the use of liquid fuel supplies. Accordingly he appealed to farmers to practise strict economy in their use of liquid fuel, and also urged that if the licensing system should be renewed they would accordingly limit the amounts they named in their applications strictly to the quantity they would require if they were sparing in its use. Confidential Information. The Secretary of the New Zealand Motor Omnibus Proprietors’ Association, Mr. C. L. Bishop, said yesterday that certain confidential information had been made available by the Government to his association relative to the. available supplies of petrol. He was convinced that there exists a very real need for the greatest economy in the use of petrol, and that the motor omnibus proprietors in New Zealand would appreciate the seriousness of the position aud make every endeavour to reduce the consumption of petrol where ever possible. He was satisfied the need for economy was not common to New Zealand. The strictest economy was necessary, he said, in order to help the Empire in its war efforts.
