The total value represented by building permits issued in the larger centres of the Dominion during the month of November (£684,879) showed a slight increase above the total for October, but a substantial decrease below the November, 1938, figure, the values for those months being £659,532 and £816,537 respectively, reports the monthly abstract of statistics.
Included in the statistics for November were 525 permits for the erection of new dwellings, as compared with 501 in October, and 607 in November, 1938. The 525 dwelling permits issued in November, 1939, included 282 houses, the construction of which was commenced by the Housing Construction Branch of the State Advances Corporation, which during the month also commenced operations on 56 new dwellings in other localities. In October the Housing Construction Branch commenced the erection of 260 new dwellings in the larger centres and 27 in other localities, the comparative figures for November, 1938, being 315 and 22 respectively.
