A £500 GRANT

Art Union Money For Free

Ambulance

The Wellington Free Ambulance Board was informed yesterday by Mr. R. L. Button, who presided in the unavoidable absence of Sir .Charles Norwood, that a letter had been received from the Minister of-Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, stating that £5OO had been allocated to the ambulance, service out of art union funds. “I am sure we are very glad to receive this handsome donation,” said Mr. Button. “It will be very useful to our finances, and 1 will move that a letter be sent to the Minister conveying our appreciation of the assistance given to the service.” “I think it also shows the appreciation of the Government for the good work being done by the Free Ambulance,” said Mr. M. Marks. “It shows that the powers that be are recognising the good service that the public is receiving.” Mr. J. H. Whittaker said the grant, was actually a set-off against the high taxation on petrol. “It has to be remembered that we are relieving the Government of its responsibilities, and it is only right that we should get some consideration, said Mr. F. Jacobs. Mr. F. Roffe, superintendent, said that the donation was in lieu of a rebate on the petrol and sales taxes, When he made the application lie had stated that this was due io them on account of the heavy taxation on petrol. He had also mentioned that the Free Ambulance had been called on to do a good deal of extra work in com nexion with the camp at Trentham. They had handled 80 cases from the camp during the recent inlluenza epidemic. They had also been called upon a few times in connexion with the camp at Seaton n.

“It seems that we have been called on many times to go to Trentham,' said Mr. Button. - “But we are constituted for that purpose, and perform this service willingly and gladly.”
