As a day high school the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College was now 1< years old, said the chairman of the board of governors, Mr. W. B. Nicholson. Ine progress the school had made since the present principal, Mr. A. McFadyen, had taken charge, had been most remarkable. Though that progress had been made, he said, he believed it was nothing to the progress that would be made during the next 10 years. The school had a history which went back almost to the roots of Petone’s history. He commented on the foresight of the men and women who started the night classes in Petone 40 years ago. The deputy-mayor of Petone, Mr. J. CBurns, and the principal of the college also spoke. The prizes were presented by the tollowing:—Girls’ first class, second class and shorthand certificates, Mrs. M. C. Chappell; boys’ first class certificates, Mr. Nash; trophies, Mrs. Morgan; boys second class certificates, Mr. J. Stonehouse; home nursing and first aid certificates. Mr. J. C. Burns : medals and prizes, Mr. McFadyen. The following special prizes were presented :— * McKenzie medal for general excellence: Sylvia Cooper. Special prizes for head prefects: Jildna Simpson and Edward Barker. Special prize for speech day: Aletheia Benson and Ronald Blandford, first qual.
