RECREATION WEEK
Youth In Action At Newtown Park VARIED PROGRAMME Though there was only a. small crowd to see it, tlie fare provided at Newtown Bark on Saturday afternoon as part of the Recreation Week. programme in Wellington was as interesting as it was varied. Youth was in action, and with basketball, athletics, acrobatics, gymnastics and baseball saw to it that never a dull moment crept into the programme. The weather was beautifully line and warm.
One of the noteworthy features from the point of view of the spectators was the expert commentary on the events, for by this means those whose knowledge of some particular sport was limited were able to follow it. This applied particularly to the baseball games, which most people find difficult to follow without expert help. _
Of the athletic events none created more interest than the mile walk, and the crowd showed its appreciation of the beautiful action of thq New Zealand champion, McCarthy. Wellington gymnasiums were to the fore again, and their pupils gave tine displays of weight-lifting, a science which'is far more interesting than its mime suggests.
As children were admitted free there was naturally a substantial muster, and they were treated to a great show by three clowns whose antics were obviously enjoyed, and not only by the children.
