THE GERMAN GRACE
* Thanks Given To Fuehrer An Auckland business man, who has bad connexions with a German manufacturing linn for many years, visited Berlin last year. He was given a warm welcome, and one of the heads of the firm invited him to his home fur dinner. He discovered that his host was the father of 13 children. When dinner was announced the members of the family drifted in one by one, and, as each took bis or her seat at the table, bent forward, and, in the shadow of their left band, murmured grace. Tlie visitor, seeking to open up the conversation, asked bis host if they ever thanked God aloud for the meal they were about to partake, as was the practice in many English homes. "They are not thanking God,” said the host, much to the visitor’s surprise. "But they were saying grace?” "Oh, yes; but they do not thank God, they thank the Fuehrer.” "Oil, I see,” said the visitor, “but what if the Fuehrer died or was assasiuated. What then’.'” "Ah then.” said the host enigmatically, "then we would thank God!”
