FIRE IN HOTEL
Damage Very Slight
Dominion Special Service
HASTINGS, October 8.
An outbreak of fire in one of the bedrooms of the Carlton Club Hotel in the early hours of this morning might have resulted in extensive damage but for the promptness with which the Hastings Fire Brigade answered the call. The hotel is in Heretaunga Street, in the heart of the business area, and it was fortunate that the alarm was given before the fire had a hold. A passing motorist noticed smoke issuing from a window, and the brigade was summoned at 2.58 a.in. from a callbox on a nearby corner. The seat of the fire was found to be a mattress, which apparently been smouldering for some time before it was noticed, and this was quickly thrown outside and extinguished. The damage was very slight and was confined to one room.
