ROWING SEASON
Petone Club’s Opening Ceremony
The hope that, in spite of the war, rowers would be able to continue their sporting activities, thereby promoting physical fitness, was expressed by the Minister of Finance. Mr. Nash, on Saturday afternoon, when, as member for the district, he opened the Petone Rowing Club's season. The large gathering of member* nnd friends and representatives of the New Zealand and Wellington Rowing Associations and the other three rowing clubs were entertained at afternoon tea ill the clubhouse. A series of races over a quarter of a mile was held. Results were :— YOUTHS’ FOURS. Petone: W. Jonassen (str.), T. Te I’uni (3). D. McDonald (2), L. Boswell (bowl 1 Wellington: E. McSherrv (str.), J. Garner (3). W. Sewell (2), D. Mayo (bowl o Star: F. G. Sparkman Istr.l. A. C. J. Coates (3), A. 1. Orr (2), J. Mole tn (bow) 3 'Von by half a length, third two lengths away. JUNIOR FOURS. Star: 11. Bevan (str.), R. <). Pearse (3), R. P. Hansen (2), G. C. Broad (bow) [ Petone: E. Craies (str.). H. Barraclough (3), D. McDonald (2). M. Clark (bow) ..;. 2 Wellington: -A. Manning (str.). K F . Fish (31, N. E. D. Mathewson (2), S. Watson (bow) 3 Won by two feet, third three lengths away.

'Williamson (bowl 3 Petone wore the early leaders from Wellington and Star but Star staged a determined finish to win by 2ft. from Petone, with Wellington a length away, third. MAIDEN FOURS. Petone: A. Lfnney (str.), H. Parsonage (3), I. Vartha (2), L. Smith (bow) 1 Wellington: A. Manning (str.), K. F. Fish (3), D. Mathewson (2.1, D. Killalen (bow) 2 Star: N. M. Rose (str.). J. Jack (31. R. P. Hill (2). W. T. Fitzgerald (bow) 3 Petone won easily from Wellington by two lengths, with Star three lengths I further back.
