EXTRA PETROL TAX

To Be Paid Into The War

Expenses Account

An assurance that the extra tux of 4d. a gallon on petrol, introduced in the Budget, would find its way into the War Expenses Account was given by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Nash, during the second reading debate on the Customs Acts Amendment Bill it: the House of Representatives yesterday.

Mr. Polson (Opposition, Stratford) said he had seen no legislation requiring the extra tax to be paid into the War Expenses Account, though Government members at the time had insisted that the money was purely for defence.

The Minister said that this claim was correct, and explained tliat the money was already being paid into the War Expenses Account, as part of the t defence vote.
