Iron And Wire Shortage
(From “Tiie Dominion,” Sept. SO, 1914.)
Advice received by a Wellington firm from its London agents indicates jh.it galvanized iron, wire of different kinds, and wire-netting, will be scarce and dear for some time to come. .Spelter, which is used in galvanizing iron and wire, was quoted before the declaration of war at £22/10/-. Later the price rose rapidly to £33/1/-, £34/5/-, £35, £3B. and £5O, About 75 per cent, of the spelter used in Britain is imported. A shortage of iron and wire will be seriously felt in New Zealand since corrugated iron is very largely used for roofing, and in some instances for covering the walls of liouws and sheds, and there is also a big denraud for plain and barbed fencing wire, wirenetting and other similar materials. * « «
A cabled message from Melbourne states that a modified scheme of representation at the Panama Exhibition has been adopted. Officials will leave for San Francisco during October.
