MIDNIGHT BLAZE

Waiwera Hotel Destroyed

By Telegraph.—Press Association. AUCKLAND, September 27. A north coast landmark, the Hot • Springs Hotel, Waiwera, a large twostoried wooden structure, was destroyed by fire shortly after midnight. The alarm was given by a neighbour, who roused the staff on the ground floor. He attempted to warn two guests on the upper floor, but was driven back by the heat and smoke. Both guests, however, were awakened by the roar of the flames and descended by a tire escape. The building was soon ablaze from end to end, and, minus water, the onlookers had to stand idly by. Only a few personal belongings were saved. The licensee, Mr. Connell, was away from Waiwera. The glare of the fire was visible from Auckland, 30 miles a way.
