INDEPENDENCE OF THE PHILIPPINES
National Assembly Debate (Received September 26, 7.30 p.m.) MANILA, September 25. The opening session of the war emergency meeting of the National Assembly unexpectedly debated independence. Assemblyman Jose Romero, a member of the Joint Preparatory Committee and a high councillor in Presidenr Quezon’s Party, proposed postponing independence in view of the adverseworld conditions. The speech aroused strong unorganized opposition at first, and the members openly broached the fact that the postponement coincided with the arrival of 14 United States bombers officially sent to assist in the preservation of neutrality. Mr. Romero said, “We talk of Ignominy and slavery. We are not slaves but free in all but form. We mar be slaves if we refuse to recognize the logic of contemporary events.”
