ATTEMPT TO REFLOAT PORT BOWEN

Steady Strain On Cables

Dominion Special Service

WANGANUI, September 26.

With the cargo now removed from the stranded liner port Bowen, efforts are being made to move tlie vessel into deep water, and a steady strain is being kept on the steel cables attached to mushroom anchors which have laid about a quarter of a mile from the beach. Hauling on the cables will be continued at each tide, and by Saturday it is hoped to have the steamer far enough from the beach for tugs to hook on and tow her out.

A start was made - ' today to dismantle the temporary buildings which were built on the beach for administrative purposes soon after the steamer drifted ashore.
