NOTED SCHOLAR DIES

AUCKLAND, September 26. A notable scholar and successful teacher, who gave 40 years of faithful service to the Auckland University College as its professor of English, Professor Charles William Egerton, died at his home in Remuera.

Professor Egerton .was born in Liverpool in 1862 and had a brilliant university career at Trinity College, Dublin. He was appointed to the Chair of English at Auckland University College in 1894. During his long occupancy of the chair he represented the college for a considerable period on the Academic Board of the University of New Zealand, and he was chairman of the Professorial Board on a number of occasions. When he was about to retire in 1932 the university authorities appealed to him to continue for another year, and he did so till the end of 1933.
