Men Employed On School Ground Improvement
BOARD’S DIFFICULTY
Recently the Wellington Colleges Board applied to the Education Department for an extension of the subsidy granted by the Labour Department, under which men are employed on improvements to the grounds of the colleges under the control of the board. At yesterday’s meeting of the board, a reply was received stating that extension of the subsidy could not be granted after October 7, up Io which date the Labour Department was prepared to meet the wages cost of the men employed on school grounds tinder the No. 13 scheme. After October 7, i lie .wages cost of men employed on improvements to school sites would be a charge against the Education Department. However, only a very limited amount was available for ground improvement works for Hie rest of the current titiaiieial year and, at present, it was possible for the department to give fav curable consideration to the most ur gent cases only. Members referred to the itnpossibi! ity of the board itself bearing the expense and it was decided to write 'o the department asking for special consideration and empli.'isizing that all the money already expended would be wasted unless money were available I ‘O emoloy groundsmen or, alternatively, the allowance for incidental expenses were increased.
