Horticultural Society Daffodil Show

RESULTS OF JUDGING A wonderful display of daffodils and other spring blossoms drew ilower-lov-ers to the Town Hall for the opening of the Wellington Horticultural < Society’s spring show yesterday. The Governor-General, Lord Galway, officiated, and Mrs. Knox Gilmer, president of the society, thanked those who had contributed to the success of the show. Outstanding among the exhibits were those of the Pioneer Club, and of Mrs. A. J. Du Pont, whose attractive stand contained flowers from the gardens of Mrs. li. Arlow, Mrs. H. D. Bennett, Mrs. B. E. Murphy, Mrs. R. G. Macniorran, Mrs. J. J. Reigh, Mrs. E. Johnstone, Mrs. J. M. A, Hott, Mr. W. H.

Cooper, Mr. G. Clarke, Mrs. Alfred Atkinson, Mrs. E. J. Righton, and Mrs. Du Pont. There were outstanding daffodil entries from Mr. H. Poole, Mr. J. Bell, and Mr. N. Amoore. The nurserymen’s displays were colourful an! interesting, and there was a novel display of hydroponics, the science of growing flowers and vegetables in water instead of in earth, by the addition of chemical plant foods. The trophies were presented by Mrs. Knox Gilmer in the evening. The Rose Joseph Trophy for decoration for the spring show was won by Karori, the R. A. Wright Trophy for suburban competition by Onslow. The Rose Joseph Trophy for cut flowers was awarded to Mr. W. H. P. Barber. Mrs. Knox Gilmer’s Trophy for polyanthus was awarded to Mr. George London. The Arnold Izard Memorial Prize for the most outstanding exhibit was won by the garden circle of the Pioneer Club.

The National Daffodil Society’s silver medal for the national daffodil class was won by Mr. J. Bell. The Arnold Izard Memorial Prize for the most meritorious exhibit was won by the garden circle of the Pioneer Club. The Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture’s challenge trophy for seedlings grown by the exhibitor was won by Mr. H. Poole, with Mr. A. Wilson second.

Championship awards were as follows: Trumpet daffodil, Mr. N. Amoore; other than trumpet, Mr. J. Bell; amateur champion, trumpet, Dr. J. McMicken; amateur champion, other than trumpet, Mr. C. F.
