GROW VEGETABLES

Lord Galway’s Appeal To Gardeners INCREASE PRODUCTION An appeal to gardeners to grow vegetables as well as flowers was made yesterday -by the Governor-General, Lord Galway, addressing those present at the opening'of the Wellington Horticultural Society’s spring show in the Wellington Town Hall. The Governor-General, who wore a sprig of golden kowhai in his buttonhole, said that in these times of trouble flowers continued to brighten existence and give a message of hope. For this one owed gratitude to horticulturists. Today the call was for efficiency in every branch of life, if New Zealand was to put her whole weight into what she had to do. He asked horticulturists therefore to grow not only flowers but also vegetables, so essential to us to maintain strength. He hoped all would take those thoughts to heart, and find Ways and moans of eliminating wastage and increasing efficiency and production. They would thus safeguard national health, and be able to send supplies overseas where they were required. The president of the Horticultural Society. Mrs. Knox Gilmer, said that since flowers would bloom whether there wore Kars or not. if was the dutv of the society as horticulturists to cherish and display them in all their beauty, as a symbol of hope and peace in the community.
