OBITUARY

Mr. D. L. Poppelwell The death has occurred of Mr. Dugald Louis Poppelwell, barrister and solicitor, and since 1592 closely identified with everything connected with the progress of Gore, states a Press Association message from Gore. He had ten terms as mayor and was a proved administrator. Works carried out during his early terms include! the construction of the Gore train" bridge, and the introduction of the drainage, water and lighting schemes. The late Mr. Poppelwell was a steward of the Gore Racing Club for 42 years, and was connected with numerous other organizations at various times. He was the first president of the Gore Chamber of Commerce. A recognized authority on Now Zealand flora and fauna and on Maori tradi lions,-be secured Gore’s large bush domain at Ilokontii Hills from the Gov eminent. He was the senior member of the Gore Bar and president for a period of the Southland branch of the Law Society. He is survived by his wife and a family of three sons and two daughters.
