UNEMPLOYED RELIEF
Abolition Suggested By Farmers Dominion Special Service. AUCKLAND, September 24. That unemployment benefits to ablebodied men under the Social Security Act should be suspended for the duration of the war and the scheme 4B for farm development work should be abolished and a revised scheme for general farm labour be introduced with the view of increasing production were resolutions passed unanimously at a meeting of the Whangarei Farmers’ Union on Friday. In introducing the motion, Mr. N. Horrobin, the president, said that if production was to be speeded up when there was a shortage of labour the Government would have to repeal the 40-hour week legislation. Farmers whose sons were enlisting would be in trouble in securing other labour, continued Mr. Horrobin. Mr. C. L. Cork said that men living in the towns were being catered for by unemployment benefits and there was no hope of these men taking country work unless they were frightened into it. if farmers’ sous were going to the war for 7/- a day, those who were not going should be willing to work for that money, stated Mr. C. Edge.
