WANGANUI TEMPERANCE CONVENTION
The annual district convention, of the Women's Christian Temperance Union opened in the lugestre Street Baptist Church schoolroom, Wanganui, last week. Airs. Cheeswas, district president, was in the chair. Delegates and visitors were welcomed, after which Airs. J. C. Wickham, superintendent of Peaoe and Arbitration, gave a brief address, in the course of which she said that it was difficult to speak of peace when there seemed to be no peace, but as peace and arbitration were included in the department’s work when the W.C.T.U. was organized in the United States of America so many years ago, faith must still be kept with God and Christ to uphold the principles for which the W.C.T.U. stood. All Christian women were urged to remain faithful, and to cultivate that peace in their hearts which alone can comfort iu these days of difficulty. The district secretary, Airs. Hussey, in her report said that a strict watch had been kept on matters jx'rtaining to the licensing question and abolition of the liquor traffic. Drinking among the Alaoris had been very much to the fore; the matter had been discussed and information sought. The size of the New Zealand drink bill, which had doubled itself in the last four years, was viewed with concern.
Plans of work were discussed and it was recommewled that a pledgesigning campaign be adopted with a view to helping young people to become total abstainers; also that Miss Appleby, Dominion organizer, be secured in order to work for one mouth in the district, immediately after the Dominion convention.
The following motion was carried unanimously: "That it be made a criminal offence to study young men in uniform with alcoholic liquor.” It was also decided that the resolution be sent forward to the National Council of AVotnen.
Airs. Gordon, 'Taihape, addressed the convention on social hygiene aud morality. All officers were re-elected, also sui>erintendenfs of departments. The district: banner presented for the union securing the most “white ribbon” subscribers was again won by' Wanganui Central with 47, aud Wanganui East second with 27, the total for the district being 129. The convention was closed 'by all singing the temperance doxology.
