Swanston won the coveted double in the New Zealand road cycling classic event from Timaru to Christchurch. lie crossed the line first and also gained fastest time (5.16.35). In a brilliant lap round Addington showgrounds, where the race tinislied,'Svaustoii beat I’. Bicknell (Auckland), also off Ulmin., by half a wheel. M. G. Annelt and M. M. Annett were dose up to fill third and fourth places. This was Swanstoii’s second success in the event, for lie won in 1935. when his time was three-qiuirters of a minute slower. The field of 58 starters for this gruelling 112-milc journey was about 20 fewer than last year’s total number of riders. Many riders found the going hard and spills were frequent. Results were :— D. The South Island 50-milc road cycling championship was held yesterday. The course was to Edendale. via Rimu and Seaward Downs, and back to Invercargill along the main road. K. Baxter, a Southland rider, was first home. C. M. Hansen won the championship by securing fastest time. Hansen, a Dunedin rider, was off scratch, and beat bis two comarkers. D. .Smart and AV. Clough, by a very narrow margin in a thrilling tussle. The competitors met a strong wind on the return journey frojn Edendale, and this slowed them down considerably. Following were the first six:.—K. Baxter (ISAmiii.), 2.26.50 2-5, 1 C. Flowers (12min.t, 2.20.20 1-5, 2: .M. Burgess (ISJmin.), 2.26.51 1-5, 3: P. Meehan (12min.). 2.23.55. 4; 11. Patton (12min.), 2.23.56 2-5, 5; H. Hubber (12min,), 2.23.56 3-5, 6. The three fastest times were secured by Hansen (2.13.551, Smart (2.13.55 1-5). and Clough (2.13.55 3-5). 72-MILE ROAD RACE C. Clark Wins Poneke Club’s Event A cycling marathon from Petone to Waikanae and back was held on Saturday xvheu 25 members contested the I’oneke Cycling Club's second annual road race over a distance of 72 miles. Twenty of the starters finished the race, which was won by C. Clark (Poneke), who went off 30 minutes ahead of the scratch men. He came home fairly comfortably 15 minutes ahead of his clubmate C. Huxford. F. Manning was third. One of the ilimit men, C. Jelly. who had a start of 50 minutes on scratch, headed the field for a great part of the race. Though he had to dismount on the Paekakariki Hill, he reached the top in front after 2hrs. 55niin. riding. Huxford was second and Clark third over the bill. Fastest time was secured by It. Dutton, 4brs. 2tnin. 15scc. Dutton, Loader and Arney, last year’s winner, were the scratch men. Arney finished in eleventh place, securing second fastest time, •Hire. smin. 30 3-ssec. 'The race, which was started by the mayor of Petone, Air. G. London, was held in perfect weather. 'The course led along the Western Hutt Road to Silverstream and then through the Akatarawa to Waikanae. From Waikanae the course was back to Petone via the Paekakariki Hill to Pahautanui and over the Haywards Road.
