DUNEDIN PREPARES

Evacuation Rehearsal

Dominion Special Service.

DUNEDIN, September 19. Plans for the evacuation of 8000 school children from Dunedin in the event of an emergency are proceeding steadily, and a large section of the community witnessed interesting manoeuvres a>t. Hancock Park, St. Kilda. • More than 60 motor-vehicles, mainly private cars, but including several light and heavy trucks, participated in the “drill.” The ear drivers Were divided into groups of six or seven, and these worked in individual groups as well as co-ordinating trs ti single unit. Every car in Dunedin has been “tabbed” for service in evacuation should it become necessary. Operations consisted of learning thoroughly all the signals necessary to ensure smooth working of evacuation. The procession of cars moved forward in groups to fixed points, there taking in (in imagination) numbers of children to be rushed to areas of safety pre-selected. The children taken ou. the ears moved off swiftly for their destination.
