FOODSTUFFS MARKET
Sharp Rise In Apple Prices Expected VEGETABLES MAY EASE The principal item of interest for housewives in the Wellington foodstuffs market this week is a likely sharp rise in the price of apples. The results of the previous wet season are stated to be beginning to show themselves in the condition of one of the varieties mainly relied on at this time of the year. Dessert and cooking apples are in"short supply and stunners arc being utilized for both purposes. Present prices are sd. and 6d. a pound. Potatoes are steady at 3d. a pound with super grade at 4d. .Rhubarb is specially dear, selling at 6d. a small bunch. Spinach ail'd lettuce continue scarce, spinach at 3d. a small bunch and lettuce at 3d. to 6d. each. Silver beet is another vegetable in short supply. Supplies of cabbages and cauliflowers are coming in again freely from Ohakune. The cauliflowers are good but the cabbages are showing signs of being affected by snow. The few days of recent sunshine have had very good results on the market gardens and this is being reflected in the quality. Flowers are also plentiful. Given a continuance of fair weather, there should be an easing in most lines next week. The fish scarcity of last week has eased but . there is a keen demand in the markets and prices are still on the high side. Examples are flounders at Hd. to 1/1 a pound and soles at lOd. to lid. Crayfish are 38/- to 50/a sack, and whitebait 6/- to 7/6 a pound. Rabbits show no sign of decrease and are 1/6 to 1/10 a pair, skinned. Oysters are 25/6 a sack.
