SPRING RACING

Opening In Sydney Today NOTES AND COMMENTS Jockey L. Dulieu In Hospital

(By

The Watcher.)

Class racing will start iu Australia today with the A.J.C. Warwick Farm meeting, and with several leading New Zealanders also engaged great interest will be taken in the results. The Warwick Stakes, for the w.t'.a. horses, is run over seven furlongs, which is likely to be too short for Royal Chief, and possibly Defaulter also, though the latter is a much better beginner than Royal Chief. Host likely, the hardest horse the New Zealanders will be up against here is the brilliant Gold Rod,'who, with good track work and an appearance in public with the colours up at a recent race meeting, is reported well forward. The IJobartville Stakes, for three-year-olds, is also run over seven furlongs and is always a valuable pipeopener to Derby prospects. High Caste, •Reading and Bonny Loch represent the best class among the Australians, who also have a promising recent winner in Dashing Cavalier, a bay colt by Constant .Son from Dashing, a mare by Heroic from Queen Gossip, by Comedy King—Polylogy, by I’olymelus. There is an abundance of staying blood in this pedigree. Beau Repaire and Beau Vite will represent the Dominion, and on last year’s form Beau Vite is the better prospect. Randwick track reports show Beau Vite to be working exceptionally well and it is on the cards that he will turn out quite the equal of any of the Australian colts. Te Hero, who is the favourite for the Epsom Handicap, will be running in the Campbelltown Handicap, over six furlongs. His Sydney trainer, and also hjs supporters, have yet to discover whether . this undoubtedly brilliant galloper has | mended bis barrier behaviour. The Spring Handicap, decided over 11 furlongs. ; should provide a line on the prospects ot Peerless in the Metropolitan Handicap. The Glenlee Handicap, in which Pearl of Asia is engaged, has a 7.7 minimum and is run over a mile. Last year the Warwick Stakes was won by Stretto from Gold Bod and Royal Chief. Aeolus won the Hobartville Stakes and later ran second in the Derby to Nuffield, who did not run at Warwick Farm. In Melbourne the principal event today is the Underwood Stakes at Wi]liamstown.__a weight-for-age race over a mile and 55. yards. Ajax overshadows his opponents iu this race.

Ketired to Stud. The Chief Ruler —Lady Bede mare Galilee has finished racing and will be retired to the stud. She is to be mated with Phaleron Bay.

Uninterrupted Preparations. Horses trained on the Wanganui truck appear likely to be well forward for early spring engagements.

Jockey in Hospital. The Ellerslie jockey L. Dulieu has entered hospital to undergo an operation for appendicitis.

Cuddle’s First Foal. Cuddle was mated with Croupier last season, and she is due to foal before the end of the month.

By Beau Pere. At a sale of racing stock in Sydney recently Billie, a four-year-old bay mare br Beau Pere —Slackline was sold to Mr. W. J. Smith, who now owns Beau Pere, for 450 guineas, Bred by Mr. T, 11. Lowry, Billie was purchased at Trentham as a yearling by Mr. W. R. Kemball for 18a guineas. She was among the first of the stock of Beau Pere to be sold.

Victorian Three-year-old. The only three-year-old in the Underwood Stakes, the weigbt-for-age event at iVilliamstowu today, is Glentino,_ a bay colt by Portofino out of Glenluciau, by King Offa—Glenluee, by Wallace. He is one of the earliest of his sire’s stock. Portofino is by the Derby winner Sansovino.

I'inie Not Opportune. Seeking an indication of what steps were being taken for the installation of a place-betting totalizator at the Awapuni racecourse. Mr. It. Davis, at the annual meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club, suggested that action might be taken in this direction, even if it meant capitalizing upon the Rangitikei Street office property of the club to provide some of the money required. The president, Mr. D. H. Collinson, said that win and place betting at the Awapuni course had been given consideration, but the stewards were of the opinion that the expenditure involved —£16,000 at the lowest estimate —was not warranted. He pointed out that the Christchurch Hunt Club, holding its meeting on the same day as the Manawatu Hunt Club, had only handled £lBO more with win and place betting at a metropolitan centre than had been invested on the single pool system at Awapuni. Consequently, paid the president, it looked as if the heavy expense of installing win and place betting faciliI ties at Awapuni was not warranted at present, though it might be in the future, and could then be undertaken when conditions were more stable. It was quite possible, though, that a divD (lend indicator would tie installed for the Christmas meeting. More urgent than a place betting totalizator was the provision of accommodation for visiting trainers and horses.

Great Irish Sprinter. The Stewards' Cup at last month’s meeting at Goodwood was won by Knight's Caprice, an Irish horse. He is evidently a sprinter quite out of the ordinary, as, in discussing his win, “Fairway” wrote as follows in the Loudon “Sunday Times”: —"Not since the great Epinard won in 11)23 has the Stewards’ Cup been won as it was won by Knight’s Caprice this year. From the moment that they appeared over the brow of the hill the race resolved itself into u procession, with Knight's Caprice first and the rest nowhere. 1 fully believe lie would have won with another 101 b. on his hack. A wonderfully quick beginner, this Irish horse got his field floundering in the first hundred yards. I hope that before the season is over we shall wee Knight’s Caprice in opposition to the recognized champion sprinters at level weights. I think he will be found capable of holding his own." Knight’s Caprice is by Knight of the Garter.

Good Year for Waipukurau. The annual report of the 'Waipukurau Jockey Club shows that the club had a very successful year, the profit being £715/6/9. The improved financial position is commented on by the report, which stales that after allowing £205 7/6 for depreciation there was a profit of £607/15/6 on the racing arcount and £lO7/11/3 on the farming account. The liability to the bank has been reduced during the year by £985/6/2, and now stands at £333/6/3. The reduction in the bank overdraft during the past seven months amounted to £4618/17/10, which is considered very gratifying. Newspaper and “Books."

A newspaper is said to have beaten the odds ou favourite. Tout Change, for the Bibury Cup, of £470, at Salisbury, .on July 5. Someone threw a paper on the track about 100 yards from home, ami Tout Change junipis) in order to avoid it. He was momentarily thrown off his balance and, though he quickly got going again, failed b_y a head to reach a 10 to 1 chance. Nettleweed. “There's some

good in newspapers, after all,” was the comment of a booknniker who would have had a heavy pay-out if Tout Change had won. Answers to Correspondents. “Central,” Palmerston North: Wiltshire's best effort in the Winter Steeplechase at Auckland was second Io Kawini in 1929. “Tai Ho." Marton: You get oue-thiril of the whole of the original wager that is one third of £72. “Doubtful,’’ Shannon: £3/16/-
