Okarito Gold Dredge
Tbe total gold won by Okarito Five Mile Beach Gold Dredging Co.. Ltd., from its claim in South Westland during the year ended June 30 at 12790 z. was greater than any annual total since 1935, while the price obtained, £7/17/5 an ounce, was the highest average price yet realised.
Operations resulted in a net profit of £4439, against £2638 in the previous year. The dividend of -Id. a share paid in August, 1938, absorbed £2333. After providing £ll5 for income tax and Writing off £205 expenditure on boring, a balance of £3009 remained in the profit and loss account. Against this balance a dividend of 10 per cent, was paid on July 22. During the year the dredge operated on a wide face extending from the centre of the claim to the edge of the lagoon. This ground, while not. particularly rich, proved to be reasonably consistent in values. The improved result for the year was due also to a reduction in lost dredging time.
The boring of the ground adjoining the north end of the claim on the lagoon side was completed early in the year. It was evident that payable ground does not exist in that area.
