Parents Entertained By Principal At rhe invitation of the headmaster, Mr. W. A. Armour, parents of pupils attending Wellington College were invited to a meeting and social gathering on Tuesday night. About 130 parents attended. The meeting was held in the gymnasium, which had been most comfortably preipared- for the occasion, and supper arranged by Mrs. Armour was served in the recreation room,. which was decorated with ieelnud poppies. The headmaster presented the balancesheet for the last garden party, showing a profit of £132/7/8, and he stated that it was expected very soon to proceed witli the erection of three lives courts. Other matters touched upon by him >n the course of his remarks included the effects of radio on school pupils, destination of pupils leaving school, billeting lor Hie exhibition, goodwill visits, the development of musical education in the college, school uniform and dress, the Beetham scholarships, the decline in school pupils, and school lunches and cafetaria. A talk was given by Mr. T. Brodie on early development of college playing areas, and some notable personalities in college history. Mr. J. R. Cuddie showed three interesting films entitled “Modern New York,” “String Instruments in the Orchestra,” and “A Voyage Round the Horn.” Arbor Day Arbor Day was duly celebrated at the college on Tuesday when a pohutukawa tree was planted by Mr. W. 11. Denton, an old boy and governor of the college. Tlie ceremony took place at noon. Short addresses were given to the assembled pupils by the headmaster, Mr. L. McKenzie, chairman of the Board of Governors. Mr, W. 11. P. Barber, and Mr. W. 11. Denton. The headmaster stated that nil four members of the Board of Governors who were present wore great tree-lovers, ami all made gardening one of their principal hobbies. Mrs, Knox Gilmer recently won the Loder Cup, while Mr. Barber received first prize for the la-st rock garden in the district. In addition to the ceremonial (Tee, nearly 500 shelter trees are being planted on the college grounds.
