OBITUARY

Mr. P. Hanlon

Mr. Patrick Hanlon, of Raumai. .ashhurst, died recently in Napier, at, the age of 80 years, says a “Dominion” Special Service message. He was born in Riverstown, County Louth, Ireland, in 1859, and emigrated at the age of 19, landing at Wellington from the sailing ship Rakia after a journey of three months. He then sailed from Wellington to Foxton in the Jane Douglas, arriving at Ashhurst in October, 1878. Ashhurst at that time was nearly all in standing bush. Mr. Hanlon married Jane, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Wilson, Ashhurst, in 18S2. He helped to fell the bush and to form most of the roads in the Ashhurst district. He was in business for many years as a liverystable proprietor and carted the rails and cement for the railway through the Manawatu Gorge. He then took up land in the Pohangina Valley and felled the bush on the property that he owned at the time of his death. He was one of the founders of the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club, of which he was president for 26 years, and a life member. He was a lite member of the Ashhurst Domain Board, the Manawatu Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and the Cosmopolitan Club.

He leaves a widow and three sons— Messrs. W. Hanlon (Woodville), S. Hanlon (Ashhurst), and P. Hanlon (Raumai) —and six daughters—Mrs. F Slattery (Waverley), Mrs. J. B. Thomson (Hastings), Mrs. W. Stephens (Inglewood), Mrs. J. Leanny (Auckland), and Misses A. and M. Hanlon (Raumai). The pallbearers at the funeral were old identities and members of the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club. - Mrs. S. L. Dean The death occurred in Napier of Mrs. Sarah Leach Dean, widow of the late--Rev. Oliver Dean, who for many years was in charge of St. Andrew’s Church, Port Ahuriri, says a “Dominion” Special Service message. Mrs. Dean was born in Napier, and was the elder daughter of Mr. R. Holt. She leaves three daughters—-Mrs. H. R. Bisley, Napier, and Misses Mona and Winifred Dean, Palmerston North and Napier respectively—and one son, Dr. K. Dean, Palmerston North. A second son, Mr. L. Dean, was killed in the Great Wax.
