RADIO STATION

Erection Of New Steel

Towers WORK ON MT. ETAKO If the weather is suitable the second of the six new steel towers to carry the aerial system of the Government wireless station ZLW on Mount Etako, Tinakori Hills, Wellington, will be hoisted into position at 3 p.m. today. The towers are being assembled on the site, and the first was placed in position about five weeks ago. The assembly of the third tower has been completed, but the tower has not yet received its final coat of paint. The hoisting of the first tower took 35 minutes. It was hinged on one side of the foundations and hoisted from the other with an electric winch and steel hawsers.

The station has done excellent work in the past. It made possible communication with Rarotonga, Samoa and Tonga. Since the early’ days of the station, radio telephone communication with Australia and ships within a 1009mile radius of New Zealand has been developed. The new aerial system will considerably increase the efficiency of the service. The big central mast is about 200 feet high and the others will be about 150 feet high. (Picture on page 9.)
