OBITUARY
Former N.S.W. Judge SYDNEY, August 1. T’he death has occurred of Mr. Alfred Paxton Backhouse, a former judge of the District Court: of New South Wales, aged 88. He was prominent iu sporting circles and took considerable interest in rowing and sailing. Lord Howard Of Penrith LONDON, August 1. Lord Howard of Penrith is dead at the age of 75. Lord Howard of Penrith was raised to the peerage in 1930. He retired from the diplomatic service in 1592 and lots Foreign Secretary from IS9I to 1595. He was later appointed to several foreign consulates and embassies and was Ambassador in Washington from 1921 to 1930.
