AIR RAID WARDENS

The New Zealand Union, of Townswomen’s Guilds (Inc.), has for some time been working in conjunction with the Defence Department in order to assist the Government in every possible way in the event of a national crisis. Mrs. James Pow, Dominion president, visited the Lower Hutt branch yesterday afternoon, with Lieutenant Curtis, who, in the absence through illness of Lieutenant Conolly, gave instruction to the class formed for the purpose of qualifying as air raid wardens.' Miss V. Kettle, president, was in the chair, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Pow and Lieutenant Curtis for their attendance. Members are enthusiastic and eager to pass the test to entitle them to a certificate of proficiency in air raid defence. Lieutenant Curtis, on behalf of the department, thanked the New Zealand Union of Townswomen’s Guilds for its co-operation, and wished the class every success. New Branch Formed. A large meeting of women interested in forming a branch of the New Zealand Union of Townswomen’s Guilds, incorporated, was held in the Methodist Hall, Lyall Bay, last week. Mrs. James Pow, Dominion president, addressed the meeting and explained the rules and objects of the organization. It was unanimously decided that the branch should be formed' and should be known as the Kilbirnie-Lyall Bay branch of the guild. Officers were elected as follows: —-President, Mrs. Hall; vice-president, Mrs. Rudkin; secretary, Mrs. Liddell; treasurer, Mrs. Thomas; committee, Mesdames Brico, Walsh, Moore, Allport, Grove, McClatchey, Marsden. and Gunderson. Conveners of the various circles were also appointed to the committee. Numerous circles were formed under the direction of the following conveners: Nursing and first aid, ' Mrs. Rudkin; dramatic art, Mrs. Walsh: singing, Mrs. Bremner; arts and crafts, Mesdames Maton and Dean.
