Awards For Bravery

TWO BRONZE MEDALS Dominion Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH, July - 7 - Two bronze medals, two framed certificates and one letter of commendation were awarded by the court of directors of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand at its thirty-ninth annual meeting. These, according to the annual report, bring the total of awards for bravery to 820. The bronze medal is the highest award of the society except iu exceptional cases of bravery. It was awarded today to Stewart William Stevenson, 1 Sussex Street, South Dunedin, for his rescue of James Carnahan, a five-year-old child, from drowning in the Otago harbour, 1 and to William George Pennell, Waihi, for his work in the rescue of the crew of the motor-launch Mako at Bowentown Heads.

A framed certificate was awarded to F. P. Cooper, aged 11 years, 79 Studholme Street, Spreydon, for rescuing Hector M. Jarden, 337 Hills Road, from drowning at the mouth of the Waimakariri River on March 26. Mr. Jarden, a man 40 years of age, paid tribute to the boy’s courage in carrying out the rescue of a heavy man in a strong tide. The other certificate was awarded to Leslie Angus, Wellington, for rescuing James Kennedy from drowning off Taranaki Street Wharf, Wellington. A letter of commendation will be sent to Ernest Faulkner, 13 Little York Street, Christchurch, for rescuing a child aged 21 years from the Selwyn River at Coe’s Ford! .The rescuer is 13 years old. Before the business of the meeting the society’s letter of commendation was presented by the deputy-mayor. Mr. J. S. Barnett, to Robert Lachner, aged 13, Durham Street, Sydenham, for rescuing Raeburn James Wilkes from drowning at Stewart’s Gully. The following officers were elected: — Patron, Lord Galway; vice-patron, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes; president, Canon W. S. Bean; court of directors, Sir Cyril Ward, Messrs. F. I. Cowlisbaw. W. H. Nicholson, A. I. Cottrell, C. A. Cooper, K. Bassett, C. D. Morris, and A. W. Owles; auditor, Mr. S. P. Godfrey.

The president paid tribute to the work of the secretary and treasurer, Mr. O. W. Hervey.
