DROUGHT RAVAGES IN AMERICA
« Serious Effect Over A Wide Area NEW YORK, July 26. Nine States, Including New England, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, with a quarter of the nation’s population and probably the largest proportion of the mixed farming areas, are undergoing a heat wave and have experienced three months of drought, exceeding the records of 60 years. Irreparable damage has been done to crops, and the milk supply has' dropped seriously, due to lack of pasture. The wafer supplies of many communities have been exhausted, and forest fires are raging over wide areas, New York State alone reporting over 40. Only heavy rain almost Immediately can save the area from almost total crop losses. Heat-ridden cities have been the scene of acute suffering, with considerable loss of life, particularly by drowning. Beaches are crowded by millions seeking relief.
