YOUTH AWARDED £816
Box Factory Accident INJURY TO LEFT HAND Damages totalling £Bl6/19/6 were awarded by the jury which heard the claim of , Douglas Arthur William Brewer, letterpress machinist apprentice, aged 18, for £1266 damages from the Empire Box Printing and Box Manufacturing Co., Ltd. The hearing began before the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) and the jury on Monday. The jury retired shortly after midday yesterday and returned about 5 p.m. Plaintiff alleged that while he was working in defendants’ factory on August 31, his left hand was trapped in a platencutting machine and he lost the thumb and one finger and two other fingers were injured. He contended that negligence had been shown in not guarding the machine properly, in directing an inexperienced minor to operate the machine and in increasing the danger by providing a run of waste and partially cut pieces for him to put through the machine. Defendants said that the accident was caused by plaintiff disregarding the instruction given by the company as to the proper operation of the machine and in not using due care. Mr. O. C. Mazengarb, with him Mr. W. E' Leicester, appeared, for plaintiff, and Mr. W. Perry, with him Mr. R. E. Pope, for defendants.
