NEGLIGENT DRIVING

Cambridge Terrace Accident JURY RECOMMENDS MERCY Adding a very strong recommendation to mercy, a jury in the Supreme Court, Wellington, yesterday convicted Leonard Jacobs Stokes, railway employee, aged 45, of negligently driving a motor-vehicle and causing bodily injury to Jessie Smart. Mrs. Smart was knocked down while crossing Cambridge Terrace, Wellington, with two children, on October 28, allegedly on a pedestrian crossing. The trial commenced on Tuesday. Summing up yesterday, Mr. Justice Reed said the case was important to the public, as well as to the man charged, because the standard of care required from motorists was set by the verdicts of juries. The jury was in retirement over four hours.

Prisoner was remanded for sentence and will be brought before the Court this morning. The Crown Prosecutor, Mr. W. H. Cunningham, conducted the prosecution, and Mr. Evan Parry represented accused.
