GERMAN DIRECTION ON TIENTSIN
Japan’s Acute Problems URGENCY OF ECONOMIC COLLABORATION (Received July 19,11.50p.m.) LONDON, July 19. Sir George Paisb, Governor of the Loudon School of Economics, in a speech in Manchester today said that after several montlis’ residence in Japan he was convinced that Japan was acting almost entirely under the direction of Germany in the Tientsin incident, reflecting Germany’s worldwide campaign against Britain in order to confront her with the greatest possible difficulties.
Japan was facing acute economic problems, and her business men foresaw disaster if she were unsuccessful in China. Worldwide economic collaboration was imperative. “We are within sight of a complete breakdown in world trade, which is absolutely inevitable unless international collaboration is undertaken.” he said. ~, Nearly 40 per cenr. of the worlds spending power was based on borrowing, Sir George added. It was frightening to contemplate what would happen when the borrowing stopped. Economic co-operation alone would save Europe from war and induce Japan to hold her hand in China.
