Christchurch Decision

CHRISTCHURCH, July 12.

One of the major events in celebration of the New Zealand centennial in the South Island will be a centennial relay race in which athletes will compete from the Sign of the Takahe, Christchurch, to the township of Akaroa, where the British flag was hoisted in 1840. The Takahe-Akaroa race is an annual event, usually restricted to Canterbury clubs, but, a decision was reached tonight to throw it open to athletes from all ceiftres. The race will be held, at the King’s Birthday weekend, June 1, 1940. A fund is to be established for the assistance of teams travelling, and invitations are to be Issued immediately.
