ALIEN POPULATIONS
Britain has been suffering embarrassment for some time past from the influx of aliens from Europe. Many of them are refugees from Germany, and they are not all desirable. It has been found necessary to tighten up the regulations regarding the entry of refugees, and still further checks are being devised. Not the least of the troubles from these unwelcome arrivals is the accentuation of the problem of employment. Nazi Secret Service police are also said to have been smuggled in under the guise of refugees. Here in New Zealand aliens have been drifting in from various parts of the world, and there does not appear to be any settled policy regarding them. Is it wise to welcome them here? ■We have our own unemployment troubles; thousands of New Zealanders today cannot obtain work except through State-subsidized employment at the expense of the rest of the community; and thousands more are on sustenance or have been forced to take old-age pensions because there is no work for them. Yet aliens are freely admitted to swell the competition for such employment as may be available. This, quite apart from the question of whether the people of this country want a mixture of races which may lead to future complications. The experience of most other countries should be sufficient warning against this.
