SALVATION ARMY

Anniversary Services In Wellington

56 YEARS OF WORK To celebrate its 56 years of liistor.v, the Wellington City Corps of the Salvation Army held a special series of meetings on Saturday and Sunday, Lieut.-Colonel Grattan, the chief secretary, being in command. The Salvation Army began its work in Wellington by holding a meeting in the old Princess Theatre in Tory Street. A few mouths later an old coach factory in Taranaki Street was leased and fitted with seats. The present citadel in Vivian Street was erected in 1890, and opened by the Prime Minister, Mr. Seddon. In 1920 it was remodelled and was reopened in that year by the late Commissioner Hodder. 2k number of old identities met on Saturday afternoon, and many reminiscences of early Army work were related. Among those who took part were Envoy Colley, the first captain of the Wellington Corps; Brother Patchett, a former officer of the corps; Brother Tonks, an early day bandmaster; and Major Hildreth, the oldest officer in the Dominion. More than 300 persons were present at the birthday tea. At a praise 'and thanksgiving meeting at .night. Captain Thomas (Brooklyn) and Major Neeve (South Wellington) congratulated the corps, and Brother Janes, one of 'the oldest soldiers, replied. The band and songsters gave a fine musical programme. Sunday’s meetings were well attended. Sergeant-Major West, from Newmarket, spoke in the morning, and Brother Leary at night. Helpful addresses were given by Lieut.-Colonel Grattan at all meetings.

Tonight a partnership festival by the Wellington city and Wellington South bands will conclude the anniversary celebrations.
