ROAD CYCLING

®Port Nicholson Club’s Open Race M. WILLIAMSON WINS i The weather was not very kind to the amateur road cyclists who took part in the Port Nicholson club’s open race on Saturday afternoon, for though there was little wind, rain before the race and during its progress, made the bitumen roadway treacherous, and cyclists who covered the distance without mishap are ‘to be commended. Though 25 senior riders were at the start of the 35-mile course—made up of two laps between Lyall Bay, Brooklyn, and the finishing line in Derwent Street that number was considerably reduced at the eud of the race. Among the more prominent senior riders to withdraw, during the race were O. Disley (P.N.), A. Pennington (Pet.), atid K. Alexander (Pon.). J. Wileon (P.N.) was left behind by the other scratch riders on the first lap return from Brooklyn, when he had gear trouble, from then on he covered the course at an easy pace. The remaining scratch men, G. Amey (P.N.), and R. Dutton (Pon.), caught the ex-Ponekc (now Palmerston North) rider, R. Loader (2min.), who was with K. Alexander, 2mln. (Pou.), and C Sparkes, tain. (Pon.), at Houghton Bay. .Sparkes withdrew soon after, and Alexander was dropped at the end of the

lap, leaving Loader, who hung on doggd* ly, to finish with the scratch men. Amey, who gained fastest time,. 1.33.46, last year, was beaten on the line by Dutton, with the third fastest man, Loader, 2min. 0 2-ssec. behind the ledder. The race was won by M. Williamson. (P.N.), who off the 13min mark, covered the course in 1.43.0 2-5. C. Jelly (Pon.) was second, and C. Clark (Pon.) third. Junior Raee. Only five of the 10 juniors who started out to race over one lap of the same course (17i miles) reached the finish without mishap. The limit juniors had lost only o ue of their number at Lyall Bay, but .the scratch men did not tare so well. H. Laurie (Pct.) being the only one to finish. ' Results: SENIORS. M Williamson (13min.)
