A SOCIETY OF HOMEMAKERS
“The League of Mothers as a Society of Home-makers” was the subject chosen by Mrs. White, Dominion president of the league, at a meeting of tlie Wellington South branch. Mrs. Bouttell presided over a large attendance.
First, a home must be clean and comfortable, said Mrs. White. Good food, appetiziugly prepared and served was essential for the health, happiness and well-being of those entrusted to the mother’s care. “There is an appalling amount of malnutrition and dental de-, cay in New Zealand, which leads one to ask. ‘Are our mothers as good cooks as they think they are?’ ” asked Mrs. White. “The league should endeavour to demonstrate to mothers the fact that cooking can be fascinating and enjoyable, and when well done, is greatly appreciated. Parents should also endeavour by example and teaching to give their children a knowledge of the life of our Saviour, for what is learnt in the home has a lasting impression on the mind. Children should also be allowed to do things for themselves—some mothers are too unselfish and want to do everything for them, but this is not good, as it. teaches the children to grow up into selfish, thoughtless individuals.” The musical items were given by the Orpheus Sextette, the League Choir, Miss Patricia Wallace, a little girl with a piano accordion, and Miss Ethel Gibson. a violinist, who was accompanied by Mrs. E. J. Dyer. Mrs. Castle gave several elocutionary items. The thought for tlie month was given by Mrs. Masters. “When obstacles and trials arise like prison walls they be. I do tlie very best I can, and leave the rest to Thee.”
The first meeting of tlie newlyformed branch of the Manakau Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union took the form of a social evening. Among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. Harold McLeavey and Mr. and, Mrs. Clyde Saint, Ohau, and members of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union. Competitions, community singing and old-time dancing helped speed the evening.
